Best Camping Near Ahmedabad: 8 Sites Across Gujarat

Salt deserts, lion forests and Aravalli foothills — Gujarat’s camping landscape is wildly underrated

Why Ahmedabad is a Surprisingly Good Base for Camping

Ahmedabad sits at the edge of some of India's most dramatically varied landscape. The Rann of Kutch to the west is one of the most otherworldly camping environments on the planet. The Aravalli hills begin just across the Rajasthan border to the northeast. The Gulf of Khambhat coastline stretches south. Most Ahmedabad residents drive straight to Goa for a weekend away — which means the options closer to home stay refreshingly uncrowded.

Here are eight verified camping options across different terrain types, distances and budgets.

1. White Rann, Kutch — ~350km from Ahmedabad

One of India's most iconic camping destinations. The White Rann is a vast salt desert that floods during monsoon and re-emerges bone-white by October. The Rann Utsav festival (November to February) brings a tented city to the edge of the desert, but the real experience is camping further out under a sky with almost zero light pollution. Full moon nights here are genuinely surreal. October to March only.

Best for: Stargazing, photography, unique landscapes
Price: ₹3,000–₹15,000 per person per night (Rann Utsav tents); budget options available outside the festival zone
Getting there: Via NH947 to Bhuj, then north to Dhordo. ~6 hours from Ahmedabad.

2. Polo Forest, Sabarkantha — ~150km from Ahmedabad

The most accessible proper forest camping from Ahmedabad. Polo Forest is a medieval-era archaeological site — Solanki-period temples hidden inside dense teak and bamboo forest on the banks of the Harnav river. The combination of history, forest and river makes it one of Gujarat's best weekend destinations. November to February is ideal; the forest is lush just after monsoon (September–October) but the river can be high.

Best for: History lovers, families, forest camping
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Vijaynagar on SH41. ~3 hours from Ahmedabad. Gujarat Forest Department runs accommodation here.

3. Saputara Hill Station, Dang — ~250km from Ahmedabad

Gujarat's only hill station sits in the Sahyadri foothills at 1,000m. The Dang district surrounding Saputara is one of Gujarat's most forested regions — dense deciduous forest, tribal Dangi villages, and the Gira Waterfalls nearby. Camping here offers a genuine respite from the Gujarati plains. Best September to February; the post-monsoon forest is particularly striking.

Best for: Families, hill camping, tribal culture
Price: ₹1,000–₹3,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Surat or Navsari on NH53, then into the hills. ~5 hours from Ahmedabad.

4. Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Banaskantha — ~130km from Ahmedabad

A rocky Aravalli landscape with one of India's densest sloth bear populations. Jessore is undervisited compared to its wildlife credentials — leopard, wolf, hyena and hundreds of bird species alongside the bears. The granite outcrops and scrub forest have a rugged beauty. Gujarat Forest Department runs camping here. October to March is best; early morning and late evening are prime wildlife hours.

Best for: Wildlife, photography, offbeat camping
Price: ₹600–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Palanpur on NH68. ~2.5 hours from Ahmedabad.

5. Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, Ahmedabad — ~70km from Ahmedabad

The closest serious nature destination to the city. Nal Sarovar is a vast seasonal wetland — one of India's most important flamingo and migratory bird sites, with over 200 species recorded. Camping at the edge of the lake in winter, with flamingos turning the horizon pink at dawn, is something few Ahmedabad residents have experienced. November to February is peak season.

Best for: Birding, families, quick weekend escapes
Price: ₹500–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Sanand. ~1.5 hours from Ahmedabad. Book forest department accommodation in advance.

6. Dharoi Dam & Aravalli Foothills, Mehsana — ~100km from Ahmedabad

The Sabarmati reservoir at Dharoi is surrounded by gentle Aravalli foothills. Riverbank camping, boating at dawn, and the quiet of the dam backwaters make this a popular family destination. Several operators have set up proper campsites with tents and meals in the surrounding hills. Year-round, though October to February is most comfortable.

Best for: Families, beginners, budget camping
Price: ₹700–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Kheralu on SH41. ~2 hours from Ahmedabad.

7. Gir National Park, Junagadh — ~360km from Ahmedabad

The last wild home of the Asiatic lion. Camping near Gir means dawn safaris, lion sightings, and the extraordinary experience of hearing lions call at night. The forest department and private operators run tented camps around the park periphery. Not budget camping — but for wildlife credentials, nothing in Gujarat competes. October to June (park closes July–October for monsoon).

Best for: Wildlife, photography, bucket-list experiences
Price: ₹3,500–₹12,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Rajkot on NH947. ~6 hours from Ahmedabad. Book safari permits well in advance.

8. Champaner-Pavagadh, Panchmahal — ~150km from Ahmedabad

A UNESCO World Heritage Site combining a 15th-century Islamic capital with a Hindu pilgrimage hill. The forest around Pavagadh hill is good leopard habitat, and the archaeological remains of Champaner are extraordinary — mosques, stepwells and palaces half-reclaimed by the jungle. Camping in the buffer zone gives access to both the history and the wildlife. October to February is ideal.

Best for: History, photography, offbeat camping
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Vadodara on NH48. ~3 hours from Ahmedabad.

Planning Your Trip

Gujarat's camping season is October to March for most destinations. The White Rann and Rann Utsav festival are best booked two to three months in advance — the festival tents sell out early. For Gir, safari permit booking opens 90 days ahead and fills fast during peak season (December to February). Polo Forest and Jessore are the best options for a spontaneous weekend without advance booking.
