Why Bhopal Punches Above Its Weight for Camping
Bhopal sits at the northern edge of the Satpura range, giving it access to some of Central India's finest camping terrain. Satpura National Park — famous for walking safaris — is within three hours. Pench is two hours away. The Betwa river valley, the Vindhya hills and the Narmada gorge are all within reach. For a city most people associate with lakes and Mughal heritage, Bhopal is an exceptional outdoor base.
Here are eight verified camping options across different terrain types, distances and budgets.
1. Satpura National Park, Hoshangabad — ~160km from Bhopal
The crown jewel of Bhopal camping. Satpura is one of India's only national parks offering walking safaris, boat safaris and jeep safaris — the combination makes it uniquely immersive. The sandstone Pachmarhi plateau, the Denwa river, and wildlife including tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild dog and gharial make Satpura exceptional. The Denwa backwaters by boat at dawn is one of Central India's great wildlife experiences. Best November to May.
Best for: Walking safaris, boat safaris, diverse wildlife
Price: ₹3,000–₹12,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Hoshangabad on NH46. ~3 hours from Bhopal.
2. Pachmarhi Hill Station, Hoshangabad — ~195km from Bhopal
Madhya Pradesh's only hill station at 1067m on the Satpura plateau. Pachmarhi has waterfalls (Bee Falls, Duchess Falls), ancient Pandav Caves, the Chauragarh temple trek and dense forest walks. The Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve surrounds the town. Camping operators have set up in the forest fringe. Best October to March; the monsoon (July–August) makes it dramatically green. Best October to June.
Best for: Hill station camping, waterfalls, cave history, families
Price: ₹800–₹3,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Pipariya on NH46. ~3.5 hours from Bhopal.
3. Pench National Park, Seoni — ~190km from Bhopal
The Jungle Book forest — Rudyard Kipling's inspiration — sits on the MP-Maharashtra border. The Pench river, teak forest and excellent tiger and wild dog sightings make this one of Central India's most rewarding reserves. Less expensive than Kanha and easier to book at short notice. Best November to June.
Best for: Wildlife, Jungle Book experience, value safaris
Price: ₹1,500–₹6,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Seoni on NH44. ~3.5 hours from Bhopal.
4. Bhimbetka Rock Shelters & Raisen Forest — ~45km from Bhopal
The closest proper camping to Bhopal. Bhimbetka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — 700 rock shelters with prehistoric paintings dating back 30,000 years, hidden in the Vindhya forested hills. Camping in the Raisen district forest around Bhimbetka puts you in dense mixed forest with the rock shelters as a dawn walk. Magical and completely uncrowded. Best October to March.
Best for: Closest to Bhopal, prehistoric heritage, forest camping
Price: ₹500–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Obedullaganj on NH46. ~45 minutes from Bhopal.
5. Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, Hoshangabad — ~110km from Bhopal
A lesser-known wildlife sanctuary that forms the core of the Satpura Tiger Reserve complex along with Satpura and Pachmarhi. Bori has tigers, leopards, wild dogs and the Tawa reservoir — excellent for fishing and birding. Very few tourist facilities, which keeps it pristine. Best November to May.
Best for: Remote wildlife, fishing, serious naturalists
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Itarsi on NH46. ~2 hours from Bhopal.
6. Chanderi & Betwa River, Ashoknagar — ~235km from Bhopal
A medieval fort town on the Betwa river with extraordinary Bundela and Malwa architecture. The Betwa river camping near Chanderi combines heritage walks through the fort and tombs with riverside camping in the Vindhya foothills. The Chanderi fabric — India's finest cotton-silk weave — is made here. Best October to March.
Best for: Heritage camping, river valley, craft culture
Price: ₹600–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Vidisha on NH146. ~4 hours from Bhopal.
7. Kanha National Park, Mandla — ~260km from Bhopal
India's finest national park for barasingha and one of the best for tigers. Kanha's famous maidans (meadows) surrounded by sal forest are unlike any other Indian reserve. The park management is exemplary and wildlife sightings are excellent. Best November to June.
Best for: Best-in-class wildlife, barasingha, premium experience
Price: ₹3,000–₹15,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Jabalpur on NH30. ~5 hours from Bhopal.
8. Kerwa Dam & Van Vihar, Bhopal — within city limits
For a zero-travel option, Bhopal's own Kerwa Dam reservoir and the Van Vihar National Park on the Upper Lake shore are genuine nature experiences. Van Vihar has lions, tigers and leopards in open enclosures — more zoo than camping — but the Kerwa Dam forest camping run by MP Tourism is legitimate outdoor overnight experience. Best October to March.
Best for: No travel needed, families, beginners
Price: ₹400–₹1,200 per person per night
Getting there: Within Bhopal city limits, southern edge.
Planning Your Trip
Bhopal's camping season is October to June for wildlife destinations; all national parks close July to September. Satpura is the standout — if you do only one trip from Bhopal, make it Satpura. The Bhopal–Pachmarhi–Satpura circuit is a natural 3-day loop covering hill station, walking safari and boat safari. Book Satpura accommodation at least a month in advance during peak season (December to March).
