Best Camping Near Hyderabad: 8 Getaways Within 300km

Gorges, tiger reserves, waterfalls and India's Grand Canyon — all within reach

Hyderabad's Surprising Outdoors

Hyderabad sits in the middle of the Deccan plateau — flat, rocky, and seemingly inhospitable to outdoor adventure. But look within 300km and the picture changes: the Eastern Ghats to the east, the northern edge of the Western Ghats to the southwest, the Godavari river system to the north, and a series of reservoirs and wildlife corridors that most Hyderabadis drive past without stopping. Here are eight camping destinations that reward the effort.

1. Ananthagiri Hills, Vikarabad — ~90km from Hyderabad

The closest hill escape from Hyderabad. Ananthagiri at ~670m is covered in coffee plantations and dense mixed forest — the greenery feels incongruous this close to the city. Camping operators have set up in the area, and the waterfalls around Ananthagiri are excellent in the post-monsoon months (August to October). Bogatha Waterfall nearby is one of Telangana's most scenic. Best July to February.

Best for: Quick escapes, first-timers, waterfall trekking
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Vikarabad on NH65. ~2 hours from Hyderabad.

2. Nagarjunasagar — Srisailam Tiger Reserve — ~150km from Hyderabad

The largest tiger reserve in India by area, straddling Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Nagarjunasagar reservoir creates a dramatic landscape — forest running to the water's edge, with the dam visible in the distance. Forest department camping is available on both sides of the reserve; the Telangana side around Srisailam town has more options. Tiger sightings are rare but leopard, wolf and sloth bear are regularly spotted. Best October to May.

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, photography, serious campers
Price: ₹1,500–₹5,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Nandyal on NH44. ~3 hours from Hyderabad.

3. Kuntala Waterfall, Adilabad — ~280km from Hyderabad

Kuntala is Telangana's highest waterfall — a 147m drop in the Sahyadri range, surrounded by tribal forest. The area around Adilabad district is remote and genuinely wild, with camping near the falls run by Telangana Tourism and private operators. The drive north through Nizamabad is pleasant. Best July to November when the falls are in full flow.

Best for: Waterfall seekers, photography, remote camping
Price: ₹700–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Nizamabad on NH44. ~5 hours from Hyderabad.

4. Papikondalu, Godavari — ~350km from Hyderabad

One of South India's most spectacular river camping experiences. The Godavari gorge through the Papikondalu hills is best accessed by boat from Rajahmundry — you camp on sandbanks inside the gorge, surrounded by steep forested cliffs. It feels completely isolated from civilisation. The river journey itself is three to four hours each way. Best October to March; avoid the monsoon entirely.

Best for: River camping, boat travel, photography, unique experiences
Price: ₹2,000–₹6,000 per person per night (includes boat)
Getting there: Via Rajahmundry on NH16. ~5.5 hours from Hyderabad.

5. Bhongir Fort, Yadadri — ~50km from Hyderabad

The closest overnight camping to Hyderabad — a monolithic rock fort rising 175m from the Deccan plain. Bhongir's rock-cut architecture and bouldering terrain have developed a small but dedicated camping community. Several operators run overnight camping at the base and summit. The sunrise from the top across the plateau is worth the early start. Year-round; summer nights are warm but manageable.

Best for: Quick overnight trips, history lovers, bouldering
Price: ₹500–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Yadagirigutta on NH65. ~1.5 hours from Hyderabad.

6. Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary — ~170km from Hyderabad

One of Telangana's quietest wildlife sanctuaries, Pocharam surrounds a large reservoir in the Nizamabad district. Deer, wild boar, sloth bear and over 200 bird species have been recorded here. Camping near the reservoir is permitted with forest department approval. The lack of crowds is its biggest asset — you'll rarely encounter another tourist. Best October to March.

Best for: Birdwatching, solitude, budget wildlife camping
Price: ₹600–₹1,800 per person per night
Getting there: Via Nizamabad on NH44. ~3.5 hours from Hyderabad.

7. Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh — ~300km from Hyderabad

Often called India's Grand Canyon, Gandikota is a dramatic gorge where the Pennar River cuts through quartzite cliffs — and the ruins of a 13th-century fort sit right on the edge. Andhra Pradesh Tourism runs basic tent camping inside the fort complex, with the gorge visible from your tent. The sunrise and sunset views are extraordinary. Best October to February.

Best for: Photography, history lovers, dramatic landscapes
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Kurnool on NH44. ~5 hours from Hyderabad.

8. Mannanur, Amrabad Tiger Reserve — ~170km from Hyderabad

The southern portion of Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve is managed separately as Amrabad — it's less visited than the main reserve and has excellent camping near Mannanur village on the plateau edge. The landscape here is classic Deccan — rocky outcrops, dry deciduous forest, seasonal streams. Wolf sightings are surprisingly common. Best November to April.

Best for: Solitude, wolf and wildlife spotting, Deccan plateau landscapes
Price: ₹900–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Mahabubnagar on SH9. ~3.5 hours from Hyderabad.

Planning Tips for Hyderabad Campers

Friday evening traffic on the ORR outer ring road can add 45 minutes to any departure — leave before 5pm or after 8pm. The Srisailam highway (NH44 south) and the Vijayawada highway (NH65 east) are the two main escape corridors. Carry cash for forest department fees — UPI works in most towns but not at remote entry gates. Summers (April–June) on the Deccan plateau are genuinely harsh; plan camping for October to March.

Hyderabad has Decathlon stores in Gachibowli and KPHB Colony — the Gachibowli store is best positioned for anyone heading south or west.
