Why Indore is a Hidden Gem for Camping
Indore is MP's commercial capital, but it sits at the edge of the Malwa plateau with the Vindhya and Satpura ranges to the south and east. The Narmada river — one of India's most sacred — flows just 70km away. Mandu, one of India's most dramatic fort cities, is 100km distant. And the Omkareshwar island temple on the Narmada offers one of India's most unusual overnight camping experiences. Indore is consistently underestimated as an outdoor base.
Here are eight verified camping options across different terrain types, distances and budgets.
1. Mandu Fort & Narmada Viewpoint, Dhar — ~100km from Indore
Mandu is one of India's great ruined cities — a 13th century Afghan sultanate perched on a 20km plateau above the Narmada valley. The ruins of palaces, mosques and baolis scattered across the plateau create an extraordinary camping backdrop. The seasonal Kapoor Sagar and Munj Sagar lakes fill in monsoon, turning Mandu's plateau into an island of ruins surrounded by water. Best July to March; monsoon is spectacular.
Best for: Heritage camping, dramatic landscape, monsoon season
Price: ₹800–₹3,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Dhar on NH3. ~2 hours from Indore.
2. Omkareshwar Island, Khandwa — ~75km from Indore
The Narmada river splits around a natural island shaped like the Om symbol, on which sits one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas. Camping on the Narmada banks at Omkareshwar — with the river, the island temple and the Vindhya hills — is one of Central India's most atmospheric overnight experiences. Boat rides at dawn, river ghats and the ancient pilgrimage town make this unique. Best October to March.
Best for: River camping, spiritual atmosphere, unique landscape
Price: ₹400–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Sanawad on NH3. ~1.5 hours from Indore.
3. Patalpani & Kalakund Waterfalls, Mhow — ~30km from Indore
The closest camping to Indore. The Choral river valley below the Vindhya escarpment has several waterfalls — Patalpani (300ft drop) is the most dramatic. The Mhow–Khandwa narrow gauge railway runs through this valley and is one of India's most scenic rail routes. Camping operators have set up along the river. Best July to November when waterfalls are full.
Best for: Closest to Indore, waterfall camping, families
Price: ₹500–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Mhow on NH59A. ~45 minutes from Indore.
4. Maheshwar, Khargone — ~90km from Indore
A Holkar-era fort town on the Narmada river bank, famous for Maheshwari sarees. The stone ghats, the 18th century Ahilya Fort (now a heritage hotel), and the Narmada at its most majestic make Maheshwar one of Central India's most beautiful riverside camping locations. Early morning on the ghats with the river mist lifting is extraordinary. Best October to March.
Best for: River camping, heritage, craft culture
Price: ₹600–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Dhamnod on NH3. ~2 hours from Indore.
5. Satpura National Park, Hoshangabad — ~230km from Indore
The same world-class walking safari destination that's Bhopal's crown jewel is also reachable from Indore. Satpura's Denwa river, sandstone landscape and tiger/leopard/wild dog sightings make the 4-hour drive worthwhile. Best November to May.
Best for: Walking safaris, wildlife, premium experience
Price: ₹3,000–₹12,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Hoshangabad on NH46. ~4 hours from Indore.
6. Janapav Hills, Mhow — ~45km from Indore
The highest point of Madhya Pradesh's Malwa plateau at 854m and the mythological birthplace of Parashurama. Janapav is a quiet forest hilltop with panoramic views across the Malwa plateau. Basic camping in the forest around the summit. Very few tourists. Best October to February.
Best for: Solitude, plateau views, easy overnight
Price: ₹300–₹800 per person per night
Getting there: Via Mhow on NH59A. ~1 hour from Indore.
7. Tawa Reservoir, Hoshangabad — ~160km from Indore
MP's largest reservoir, built on the Tawa river in the Satpura foothills. The reservoir is surrounded by forest that forms part of the Satpura Tiger Reserve — elephant, tiger and leopard occasionally enter the buffer zone. Boating, fishing and forest walks available. Best October to March.
Best for: Reservoir camping, fishing, Satpura buffer zone
Price: ₹700–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Itarsi on NH46. ~3 hours from Indore.
8. Ujjain & Shipra River, Ujjain — ~55km from Indore
One of India's seven sacred cities, on the Shipra river. Ujjain hosts the Kumbh Mela every 12 years (next in 2028) and is a living pilgrimage city. Camping on the Shipra river ghats combines the atmosphere of ancient India with a genuine outdoor overnight. The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and the Ram Ghat at dawn are unmissable. Best October to March.
Best for: Spiritual river camping, heritage, pilgrimage culture
Price: ₹300–₹1,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via NH52. ~1 hour from Indore.
Planning Your Trip
Indore's camping season is October to March for most destinations. Patalpani and Mandu are spectacular in monsoon (July–September) but road conditions can be difficult. Satpura requires the most advance planning — book accommodation 4–6 weeks ahead. The Indore–Omkareshwar–Maheshwar–Mandu loop along the Narmada is one of Central India's great road trips and can be done in 3 days.
