Why Nagpur is India's Most Underrated Camping Hub
Nagpur sits at the geographic centre of India, which turns out to be an extraordinary position for camping. Within 300km you have Tadoba — Maharashtra's best tiger reserve. Pench, Kanha and Satpura are within a half-day's drive. The Satpura range, the Wainganga river valley, and the Melghat tiger reserve cover completely different terrain types. No other Indian city is surrounded by this density of wildlife and forest camping.
Here are eight verified camping options across different terrain types, distances and budgets.
1. Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Chandrapur — ~150km from Nagpur
Maharashtra's oldest and most successful tiger reserve, with one of India's highest tiger densities. Tadoba is famous for tigers that are habituated to vehicles — sightings are more reliable here than almost anywhere else in India. The teak forest landscape is beautiful and the Tadoba lake creates a photogenic backdrop. Camping in the buffer zone gives access to evening safaris and early morning starts. Best October to June (park closes July–September).
Best for: Tiger safaris, wildlife photography, bucket-list experiences
Price: ₹2,500–₹10,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Chandrapur on NH930. ~3 hours from Nagpur. Book safari permits well in advance.
2. Pench National Park, Seoni/Chhindwara — ~90km from Nagpur
The forest that inspired Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. Pench straddles the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border — the MP side (Seoni district) generally offers better wildlife visibility. Dense teak and mixed forest, the Pench river, and excellent birding alongside tigers, leopards and wild dogs. Several good camping operators in the buffer zone. Best November to June.
Best for: Jungle Book experience, wildlife, families
Price: ₹1,800–₹8,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Seoni on NH44. ~2 hours from Nagpur.
3. Melghat Tiger Reserve, Amravati — ~250km from Nagpur
Maharashtra's most remote tiger reserve, in the Satpura foothills. Melghat is deliberately kept less accessible — which means it's far less crowded than Tadoba or Pench. The Korku tribal villages, the Sipna and Gadga rivers, and the teak forest ridgelines are extraordinary. This is expedition camping — basic facilities, genuine wilderness, significant wildlife. Best November to May.
Best for: Remote camping, serious wildlife, tribal culture
Price: ₹1,200–₹4,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Amravati on NH53. ~5 hours from Nagpur.
4. Navegaon National Park, Gondia — ~180km from Nagpur
A quiet national park in eastern Maharashtra, centred on the Navegaon lake. Far less visited than Tadoba or Pench, Navegaon rewards patient visitors with excellent birding (over 300 species), sambar, nilgai, wild boar and the occasional leopard. The lake at dawn in winter is exceptional for waterbird photography. Maharashtra Tourism runs basic accommodation here. Best October to March.
Best for: Birding, quiet wildlife camping, families
Price: ₹600–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Gondia on NH53. ~3.5 hours from Nagpur.
5. Kanha National Park, Mandla — ~260km from Nagpur
One of India's finest national parks — the place where Project Tiger had its greatest success. Kanha's meadows (maidans) surrounded by sal forest create a landscape unlike any other Indian reserve. Barasingha (swamp deer), once nearly extinct, thrive here. Tiger sightings are frequent and the park management is excellent. Best November to June.
Best for: Best-in-class wildlife, barasingha, premium safaris
Price: ₹3,000–₹15,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Jabalpur on NH44, then east. ~5 hours from Nagpur.
6. Ramtek & Khindsi Lake, Nagpur — ~50km from Nagpur
The closest proper camping to Nagpur. Khindsi lake is a large reservoir with water sports and lakeside camping; Ramtek nearby has a hilltop temple complex with ancient roots (mentioned in Kalidasa's Meghaduta). Several operators run weekend camps at Khindsi. Year-round; best October to February.
Best for: Quick weekend escape, families, beginners
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Ramtek on NH44. ~1 hour from Nagpur.
7. Satpura National Park, Hoshangabad — ~350km from Nagpur
Madhya Pradesh's most diverse national park and one of India's best for walking safaris — rare in Indian reserves. The sandstone landscape, the Denwa river, and the mix of wildlife (tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild dog, gharial) make Satpura exceptional. Boat safaris on the Denwa backwaters are a highlight. Best November to May.
Best for: Walking safaris, boat safaris, diverse wildlife
Price: ₹3,000–₹12,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Nagpur-Jabalpur highway, then south to Pachmarhi/Madhai. ~6 hours from Nagpur.
8. Totladoh Reservoir, Pench — ~80km from Nagpur
The reservoir created by the Pench dam sits on the edge of the national park buffer zone. Lakeside camping here is accessible, affordable and genuinely beautiful — the forested hills of Pench visible across the water. Several operators have set up camp sites on the reservoir banks. A good option if Pench tiger reserve accommodation is booked out. Year-round; best October to March.
Best for: Budget camping, families, quick Nagpur weekend
Price: ₹600–₹1,800 per person per night
Getting there: Via Seoni on NH44. ~1.5 hours from Nagpur.
Planning Your Trip
Nagpur's camping season is October to June for wildlife destinations. All national parks close July to September for monsoon. Tadoba and Kanha safari permits sell out months in advance during peak season (December to March) — book as early as possible. Pench and Melghat are easier to book at shorter notice. The Nagpur–Pench–Kanha–Tadoba circuit is one of India's best wildlife road trips and can be done in four to five days.
