Why Surat Has More Camping Options Than You'd Think
Surat is Gujarat's commercial engine — a city of diamonds, textiles and Gujarati food. It's not an obvious camping base. But the Tapi river valley, the Dang tribal district in the Western Ghats foothills, the Saputara hill station and the undeveloped South Gujarat coastline all sit within a few hours. For a city of 7 million, the outdoor options are genuinely surprising.
Here are eight verified camping options across different terrain types, distances and budgets.
1. Saputara Hill Station, Dang — ~165km from Surat
Gujarat's only hill station, at 1000m in the Sahyadri range on the Maharashtra border. Saputara has a lake, a ropeway, forest walks and views across the Dang forest. The surrounding Dang district is a tribal belt — Bhil and Kunbi communities have lived here for centuries. Camping operators have set up around the lake. Best October to February and June to September (monsoon is spectacular here).
Best for: Gujarat's only hill camping, tribal culture, accessible
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Waghai on NH53. ~3.5 hours from Surat.
2. Purna Wildlife Sanctuary, Dang — ~180km from Surat
A biodiversity hotspot in the Sahyadri foothills — the northernmost extent of the Western Ghats. Purna has leopards, sloth bears, wild boar and excellent birding including the Indian pitta and Malabar whistling thrush — species at the northern edge of their range. The forest is dense teak and mixed deciduous. Very few tourists. Best October to March.
Best for: Uncrowded wildlife, birding, Western Ghats northern limit
Price: ₹600–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Vyara on NH53. ~3 hours from Surat.
3. Daman & Devka Beach, Daman — ~130km from Surat
A Union Territory on the Gujarat coast with Portuguese colonial heritage and a relaxed beach atmosphere. Devka Beach has reasonable camping options with the Arabian Sea and the Daman fort as backdrop. The Portuguese-era churches and fort make for interesting heritage walks. Best November to March.
Best for: Beach camping, colonial heritage, Gujarat coast
Price: ₹700–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Navsari on NH48. ~2.5 hours from Surat.
4. Narmada River & Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary — ~100km from Surat
The Narmada river downstream of the Sardar Sarovar dam flows through a forested gorge in the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. Leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles and excellent birding along the river. Boat camping on the Narmada backwaters is one of Gujarat's best outdoor experiences. Best October to March.
Best for: River camping, wildlife, Narmada backwaters
Price: ₹700–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Bharuch on NH48. ~2 hours from Surat.
5. Girnar & Gir Forest, Junagadh — ~350km from Surat
The Gir Forest is the last refuge of the Asiatic lion — the only wild lion population outside Africa. Combined with a trek up the 5-peak Girnar hill (one of Jainism's holiest sites at 1117m), this is one of Gujarat's great outdoor circuits. Camping in the Gir buffer zone gives access to lion safaris. Best November to May (park closed June–October).
Best for: Asiatic lion, Girnar trek, Gujarati wildlife
Price: ₹1,500–₹6,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Rajkot on NH27. ~6 hours from Surat.
6. Dang Forest & Wilson Hills, Dang — ~150km from Surat
Wilson Hills at 900m is a smaller, quieter alternative to Saputara in the same Dang district. The British-era bungalows, the Harnav river and the dense Dang tribal forest make Wilson Hills more atmospheric. The Dang Darbar — a traditional tribal festival — is held annually in January. Best October to February.
Best for: Quiet forest camping, tribal culture, heritage bungalows
Price: ₹500–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Vansda on NH53. ~3 hours from Surat.
7. Vansda National Park, Navsari — ~65km from Surat
A small but dense national park in the Sahyadri foothills — the closest forest camping to Surat. Vansda has leopards, sloth bears, sambar and excellent birding. The Ambika river runs through the park. The forest is a mix of teak, bamboo and mixed deciduous — beautiful in the post-monsoon season. Best October to February.
Best for: Closest forest camping to Surat, leopards, birding
Price: ₹500–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Navsari on NH48. ~1.5 hours from Surat.
8. Ubharat & Tithal Beach, Valsad — ~90km from Surat
South Gujarat's finest beaches. Tithal has a distinctive black sand beach unlike Gujarat's usual sandy coastline. Ubharat has cleaner water and a more secluded character. Beach camping operators are beginning to set up here. Best November to March.
Best for: Beach camping, black sand beach, accessible Gujarat coast
Price: ₹600–₹1,800 per person per night
Getting there: Via Valsad on NH48. ~2 hours from Surat.
Planning Your Trip
Surat's camping season is October to March for most destinations. Saputara is also excellent during monsoon (July–September) — the Dang forest turns intensely green. Gir Forest closes June to October. Vansda and Shoolpaneshwar are the easiest quick escapes. The Surat–Dang–Saputara loop is a natural 2-day circuit covering tribal forest, hill station and waterfall camping.
