Why Visakhapatnam is an Underrated Camping Base
Visakhapatnam — Vizag — sits between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, giving it a camping geography that most people overlook. The Araku Valley and Borra Caves are world-class destinations. The coastline north of the city has some of Andhra Pradesh's most undeveloped beaches. The tribal belt of the Eastern Ghats has a culture entirely distinct from the rest of South India. This is one of India's most underexplored camping regions.
Here are eight verified camping options across different terrain types, distances and budgets.
1. Araku Valley, Alluri Sitharama Raju District — ~115km from Vizag
The crown jewel of Eastern Ghats camping. Araku Valley sits at 900m in a bowl of coffee plantations, tribal villages and forested hills. The train journey from Vizag to Araku — through 58 tunnels and 84 bridges — is one of India's most scenic rail routes and worth doing one-way. Camping here means cool nights, excellent Araku coffee at source, and access to Borra Caves (India's largest stalactite caves) nearby. Best October to February.
Best for: Scenic train journey, coffee estate stays, tribal culture
Price: ₹800–₹3,000 per person per night
Getting there: Road via NH516E (~3 hours) or the scenic Kirandul train line from Vizag (~5 hours — the journey is the destination).
2. Lambasingi, Alluri Sitharama Raju District — ~100km from Vizag
Called the "Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh" — temperatures drop below 0°C in December and January, making this the only place in South India where frost is common. Lambasingi sits at 1,000m above the Godavari gorge with apple orchards, strawberry farms and misty mornings. Very few proper camping operators here — this is mostly tents and sleeping bags territory. Best November to February for the cold; October for post-monsoon green.
Best for: Cold-weather camping, unique South India experience, photography
Price: ₹500–₹1,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Chintapalle on NH516E. ~3 hours from Vizag.
3. Rushikonda & Rishikonda Beach, Vizag — ~15km from city centre
The closest camping to Vizag. Rushikonda is Andhra Pradesh's premier beach camping location — golden sand, clear water, consistent waves for surfing, and several operators running beach camps. The AP Tourism water sports complex here is well-maintained. Not wilderness camping, but for an accessible overnight beach experience near the city, it's excellent. Year-round; best October to March.
Best for: Beach camping, water sports, groups
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: ~20 minutes from Vizag city centre via Beach Road.
4. Papikondalu, East & West Godavari — ~200km from Vizag
A boat journey through the Godavari gorge between towering Eastern Ghats cliffs — one of India's most dramatic river landscapes. The Papikondalu range rises 600m above the river on both sides; tribal Koya and Konda Reddi villages dot the banks. Houseboat stays and riverside camping are the way to experience this. The gorge is accessible only by boat from Rajahmundry or Bhadrachalam. Best October to March.
Best for: River camping, tribal culture, dramatic landscapes
Price: ₹1,500–₹5,000 per person per night (houseboat packages)
Getting there: Drive to Rajahmundry (~200km, 4 hours), then boat into the gorge.
5. Deomali Peak, Koraput (Odisha border) — ~300km from Vizag
The highest peak in Odisha at 1,672m, sitting just across the Andhra-Odisha border. The Eastern Ghats here are dense with sal forest, tribal villages and wildlife including elephants and leopards. Camping near Deomali is genuinely remote — very few facilities — and rewards with extraordinary Eastern Ghats ridge views. Best October to February.
Best for: Remote trekking, Eastern Ghats ridgeline, serious campers
Price: ₹400–₹1,200 per person per night
Getting there: Via Koraput on NH26. ~6 hours from Vizag. A local guide is strongly recommended.
6. Bheemunipatnam Beach, Vizag — ~25km from city centre
One of Andhra Pradesh's cleanest beaches, with a Dutch cemetery dating to the 17th century and a historic lighthouse. Bheemunipatnam (Bhimili) is significantly quieter than Rushikonda — local fishermen, fewer tourists, and a long stretch of sand backed by casuarina groves perfect for camping. Several operators have started running beach camps here. Year-round; best November to February.
Best for: Beach camping, history, quiet getaway
Price: ₹600–₹2,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Beach Road north from Vizag. ~40 minutes from city centre.
7. Machkund River & Balimela Reservoir, Malkangiri — ~350km from Vizag
A remote reservoir in the Malkangiri district where Andhra, Odisha and Chhattisgarh meet. The Balimela reservoir is vast and undeveloped — river camping, fishing, and tribal village walks through Kondh territory. This is the Eastern Ghats at their most wild. Very few tourist facilities; expedition-level planning required. Best November to February.
Best for: Remote camping, fishing, tribal belt exploration
Price: ₹300–₹1,000 per person per night
Getting there: Via Jeypore on NH326. ~7 hours from Vizag. Local guide essential.
8. Horsley Hills, Chittoor — ~430km from Vizag
Andhra Pradesh's oldest hill station at 1,265m, in the southern Eastern Ghats. Horsley Hills is lush, relatively cool and significantly less visited than comparable Tamil Nadu or Karnataka hill stations. The forest around the plateau has good birding and the occasional sloth bear. AP Tourism runs accommodation here. Best October to February; the monsoon (July–September) makes it dramatically green but roads can be difficult.
Best for: Hill camping, birding, families
Price: ₹800–₹2,500 per person per night
Getting there: Via Tirupati on NH716. ~8 hours from Vizag. Better as a stop on a longer Andhra road trip.
Planning Your Trip
Vizag's camping season is October to March for most destinations. Araku and Lambasingi are best December to February for cooler temperatures. The Papikondalu gorge boat journey requires advance booking during peak season. For Eastern Ghats tribal belt destinations, a local guide from the respective district is strongly recommended — both for navigation and for meaningful community interaction.
